SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Maryland State Council of the Knights of Columbus is the sponsor of several High School and College scholarships for its members and for Catholic Students in general. Below is a brief summary of these scholarships and information regarding eligibility for scholarship awards.


The Frederick M. Gossman Memorial High School Scholarship


Designed to assist members of the Knights of Columbus holding membership in councils within the jurisdiction of Maryland in paying tuition for their sons and daughters at accredited Catholic High Schools. Two grants of $1,000.00 per year for up to four years are awarded. One additional grant of $1,000.00 per year for up to four years funded by the Maryland Knights of Columbus Insurance Advisors will also be awarded. Awards will be made on the basis of academic excellence, personal qualifications, and financial need. Continued support after the first year is contingent on continued academic success. The children of deceased members are also eligible, provided the member was in good standing at the time of death. Funds are applicable to tuition only.


The William J. O'Brien Jr, Memorial Catholic High School Scholarship


One grant of $1,000.00 per year for up to four years will be awarded. Eligibility for a grant under this program is open to Catholic students who are residents of the State of Maryland. Affiliation with the Knights of Columbus is not required. However, children and grandchildren of a member of a Knights of Columbus council within the jurisdiction of Maryland are also eligible. Applicants must have been officially accepted at or must be students at accredited Catholic High Schools. Applications will be judged on academic excellence, personal qualifications, and financial need. Continued support after the first year is contingent on continued academic success. Funds are applicable to tuition only.


The Father Amos Gaudette Memorial College Scholarship

Two grants of $1,500.00 each year for up to four years are available to members of the Knights of Columbus in councils within the jurisdiction of Maryland who are entering their first year of college. In addition to members, these grants are also open to wives and children of members. Wives and children of a deceased member are eligible, provided the member was in good standing at time of death. Applicants may apply to any accredited four-year college or university. Grants are made on the basis of academic excellence, personal qualifications, and financial need, with primary emphasis placed on academic excellence. Continued support after the first year is contingent on continued academic success. Funds are applicable to tuition only.


The Monsignor William F. Sauer College Scholarship


Two grants of $1,500.00 each year for up to four years will be awarded. Eligibility for a grant under this program is open to all Catholic students who are residents of the State of Maryland and are in their senior year of high school. Applicants may apply to any accredited four-year college or university. Grants are made on the basis of academic excellence, personal qualifications, and financial need, with emphasis on financial need. Continued support after the first year is contingent on continued academic success. Funds are applicable to tuition only.

Supreme Council Scholarships

Three College Scholarships are available for undergraduate studies for students entering the freshman year in a program leading to a Bachelors Degree. The scholarships are awarded for one year and are renewable for each year of undergraduate study to a total of four years subject to evidence of satisfactory academic performance and the discretion of the committee on Scholarships. The scholarships are competitive and are awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Selection is made after a review of the secondary school record, class rank and the results of aptitude test scores. To be considered eligible, an applicant must be a member in good standing of the Knights of Columbus; the son or daughter of such a member, or of a deceased member who was in good standing at the time of his death; or a member of the Columbian Squires. The scholarship grant is $1,500.00 per year for each of the three scholarships. To be eligible a student must attend a Catholic College or University.

The deadline is February 1, 2009 for Catholic University of America, and March 1, 2009 for other Catholic Colleges.

JOHN W. McDEVITT (Fourth Degree) SCHOLARSHIPS:

These scholarships are a tribute to Past Supreme Knight, John W. McDevitt. The scholarships are on the same basis as those provided under the Fourth Degree Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarship Fund and are available to members, wives, widows, and sons and daughters of members including members who died while in good standing at the time of their death. (Not limited to Fourth Degree members).Application information and scholarship amount are the same as Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarships.

PERCY J. JOHNSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS:

This scholarship was a residual bequest received from the Estate of Percy J. Johnson (deceased). The order offers a limited number of scholarships from the earnings of this fund established in his name. Brother Johnson stipulated that these scholarships be distributed to young men in the form of financial aid.

In accepting this bequest, the Board of Directors voted to administer the scholarship awards in conformance with the rules of the Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarship Program, subject to Brother Johnson's specific wishes. To be considered for these scholarships, the following is required:

  1. Fourth Degree Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholar application.
  2. Copy of the student's Aid Report (SAR).
  3. Eligibility, application, deadline, and scholarship amount are the same as Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarships.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS:

The Fellowship covers - Room, Board and Tuition, and may be renewed annually up to three years.

BISHOP CHARLES P. GRECO GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS:

The Fellowships were named in honor of the late Supreme Chaplain, Bishop Greco, are for full time graduate study leading to a Master's Degree in a program designed for the preparation of classroom teachers of persons with mental retardation. The maximum amount of the grant is $2,000.00 payable to the University in amounts not to exceed $500.00 per semester, renewable each semester of the program to a maximum of four semesters upon evidence of satisfactory performance and subject to the Committee on Fellowships. The applicant must be a member of the Knights of Columbus in good standing or the wife, son or daughter of such a member or deceased member. Applicants must have a good undergraduate record and give evidence of interest in, and aptitude for, work with persons with mental retardation. Special consideration will be given to applicants who select a Catholic graduate school. The final date for filing for this Fellowship is May 1, 2009. Applications may be obtained from:

FRANCIS P. MATTHEWS AND JOHN E. SWIFT EDUCATIONAL TRUST SCHOLARSHIPS:

These scholarships include tuition, fees, room, board and books. These scholarships apply to sons or daughters of Veterans of the Military, who died in action in World War II and the Korean, Viet Nam, and Gulf Wars. They also pertain to sons or daughters of policemen and firemen who have died in the line of duty, and were members of the Knights of Columbus at the time.

The Maryland State Council Scholarship Committee has no responsibility for the above listed scholarships that are administered by our Supreme Headquarters. There are more than 100 scholarships granted each year - all college scholarships, etc. No High School scholarships are granted by the Supreme Council.
