About Cub Scouting
:

In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America created a new opportunity called Cub Scouting. The program was designed for the ‘too young for Boy Scouting” boy. It is a year-round home-centered program with an emphasis on involving boys and their families in activities that build relationships and that are fun.

Boys join Cub Scouting to have FUN.
For the boy, Cub Scouting has the following purposes:

· Influence character development
· Develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
· Encourage good sportsmanship and growing strong in mind and body
· Strengthen the ability to get along with others
· Foster a sense of personal achievement
· Preparation for Boy Scouting

What does it Cost
:

The fee to join Pack 48 is only $65.00 per year which includes:

· $10.00 Boy Scouts of America registration fee
· $12.00 Boys Life Magazine fee
· $43.00 Pack activity fee which covers leader training, awards and other needs of the Pack.

Fees can be paid at the time when you sign up your son.

The rest of the costs are associated with the time spent with your boy(s) and family. It is a small investment that gives back for years to come.

About Pack 48:

Pack 48 was chartered through Saint Katherine Drexel Catholic church in Frederick, MD in 2003.

We are a fun pack enjoying activities such as camping, hiking, pinewood derbies, rain gutter regattas, fishing derbies, and bike derbies. The pack also provides a foundation of civic responsibility and Christian values though participation in activities at St. Katherine Drexel and within the Frederick community.

Boys in 1st through 5th grade (7 to 10 years old) are shown friendship, citizenship, physical fitness, and spiritual growth in a family oriented pack. We have Pack Meetings one Thursday evening a month during the school year. and we encourage all family members to attend. Den meetings are usually twice a month. Separate Den meetings are also held one or two times per month at dates, times and locations determined by each Den Leader. Cub Scouts requires parental involvement so be ready to help your young scout on this great adventure.

Ranks

TIGER CUBS is a family centered program for 1st graders (or boys 7 years of age) and their adult partners. Meetings are held twice a month. All of the achievements are centered on one of 5 themes: making my family special, where I live, keeping myself healthy and safe, how I tell it, and let's go outdoors.

BOBCATS are the beginning rank of Cub Scouting. Every boy, regardless of when he enters the program, earns this rank. To become a Bobcat the Cub Scout learns the Cub Scout Motto and Promise, handshake, Salute and Sign, and the meaning of WEBELOS. After the boy has earned his Bobcat rank, he begins work on his age appropriate rank with his family and Den.

The WOLF rank is for 2nd grade boys. This rank's activities are centered on themes of: feats of skill, keep your body healthy, know your home and community, tools for fixing and building, start a collection, your living world, cooking and eating, be safe at home and on the street, family fun, Duty to God, and making choices. When the required achievements are completed the Scout is awarded his Wolf rank. The Scout may continue to work on 22 different themed activities earning gold and silver arrow points for his uniform to mark these achievements.

BEAR scouts are 3rd grade boys. This rank works on 24 achievements in 4 different themes: God; country; family; and self. 12 of 24 achievements must be completed to earn the Bear rank. Gold and silver arrow points also mark additional achievement.

WEBELOS Scouts are 4th and 5th grade boys. This is the rank in Cub Scouting where the transition to Boy Scouts occurs. Webelos Scout parents no longer approve the boy's achievements, as the Webelos patrol leader becomes his teacher. It is the Webelos leader that introduces the Webelos Scout to the Cub Scouting out-door program. Once the Webelos rank is earned there are 20 different Webelos awards that can be earned.

Most of the awards consist of bar pins, ribbons, and pendants, and are worn on the uniform above the left pocket on formal occasions.

The last rank that a Cub Scout can earn is the Arrow of Light.

We encourage all of our members to participate in activities within the district and council, as well as numerous activities within the Frederick Community. Some of these activities include family camping, Scout Night at Keys Stadium, Scouting for Food, The Golden Rule Walk, Scout Camps and many other fun events.

Religious Emblems

“A Scout is reverent.” All Scouts show this by being faithful in their duty to God. Some go further and give special service. This can qualify them for a religious emblem. Such an emblem is not a Scouting award. It is conferred on a Scout by the religious leader in his own church. Each faith has its own requirements for earning its emblem.

Light of Christ - Designed for Cub Scouts in the Tiger or Wolf Group. Recipients are in the 1st and 2nd grades, and typically take 4 months to earn this award. Parvuli Dei - Designed for Cub Scouts in the Bear to Webelos Groups. Recipients are in the 3rd through 5th grades, and typically take 4 months to earn this award.
