First Sunday of Advent

Dec 1, 2019

I have a sign over my kitchen sink that reads: “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans for the future.”  The season of Advent this year reminds us to remember that, with God as our co-pilot, we can handle life better if we learn to “Expect the Unexpected.” You can discover the inner strength needed for this approach by making a commitment to regular prayer during Advent and allowing more space in your life for God.  We are providing two free Advent booklets for home use.   You can also prepare the scripture readings as a family before coming to Mass each week with the aid of the booklet “At Home with the Word” (and other books) available on the narthex center table.  If you come to weekend Mass 25 minutes early during Advent, you can join in the rosary and enjoy some quiet time.

We offer a blessing of expectant parents twice each year during weekend Mass.  Please alert family members and friends who may want to share in this blessing at the 9 AM Mass next Sunday 8 December—and register with pastoral associate Brian McCrohan in the Parish Office this week if you plan to attend.

We have about 80 households (who have been making their offertory donations electronically under our old system) who have not gone online (or sent in the form) to register in our new FaithDirect system, where you can designate donations to all collections.  Soon we will be disabling our old system, and so we ask you to follow the instructions in this bulletin to sign up before the end of the year.

This weekend (on Sunday evening) we are welcoming many of our younger parishioners to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time.  We thank their parents who have helped prepare them for this sacrament, and we pray that these children may learn (especially through our example) to share the forgiveness they receive from God generously with others in the events of daily life.
