The Ascension of the Lord

May 24, 2020

Next weekend we will be celebrating the great Feast of Pentecost.  There will be no Pentecost Breakfast uniting us in celebration, and no offering of Pentecost Spirit Renewal Scrolls uniting us in service.  But from our homes, as a “domestic” church, we will still celebrate the birthday of the Church and the gift of the Holy Spirit—a gift that continues to guide us as individuals and as a community of faith 2,000 years later.  To get into the Spirit of the feast, make sure you wear some red clothing at home as you worship virtually with your parish community.

Frederick County has announced that houses of worship may be able to open after 29 May if there is not an increase in hospitalizations before then from the initial phase of the loosening of restrictions.  We have received a 36-page document of required supplies and necessary procedures from the Archdiocese of Baltimore which must be addressed before any parish is allowed to re-open for public Masses.  Our parish staff is diligently developing a plan to be able to open our church safely in the next few weeks (hopefully by mid-June) and so I look forward to being able to announce that date to you as soon as I can.

It was with disappointment that we have decided to cancel our Vacation Bible School for next month.  About 100 children will not have the opportunity to joyfully draw closer to Jesus through this summer program.  It was concluded that we just couldn’t conduct the program safely in light of the current pandemic.  Most other parishes are doing the same.

On Memorial Day, we remember those who have given their lives in service to their country and to the cause of freedom—for they have made the ultimate sacrifice.  This year we can’t help but remember all those on the front lines who have lost their lives battling the COVID-19 pandemic and assisting others.  We also remember in prayer those who grieve their loss.
