Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Having just celebrated the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ we have been reflecting on the mystery of our unity with Christ through the Eucharist.  That unity within the Church as the Body of Christ, prompts us to extend that unity to all of our brothers and sisters.  In the Kingdom there should be no distinction among us… “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female” (Gal 3:28).  That unity among us is something to strive for and something we have not yet achieved.

The divisions among us based on racism and prejudice must be addressed if we are to truly be the Body of Christ in the world.  This is ongoing work as we seek to understand the impact of racial prejudice and take active steps to challenge it.  Our parish’s social justice ministry recently met to discuss this issue and agreed that it is important to reflect on these issues as a parish.  We are in the midst of planning a series of opportunities for reflection and discussion on the subject of race and discrimination, and our call as Christians to be anti-racist.

Our first offering will be a discussion about the film “Just Mercy.”  This film, released last year, focuses on the work of world-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson as he works to free those wrongly condemned to death and awaiting their sentence to be carried out on death row.  It is a powerful story of the impact of racism on our justice system.  The film is currently free to view on several streaming sites including YouTube and Amazon Prime.  Details for viewing can be found here: https://www.justmercyfilm.com/

We encourage you to watch the movie on your own and then join us for a discussion about it.  The discussion will be through zoom on Tuesday June 23 at 7:00PM.  Details for joining the zoom can be found at the end of this Katharine Konnection.  Our hope is that this will be the beginning of a parishwide discussion on race and the racial discrimination that so many have experienced in our country.  Please join us.
