This weekend we welcome Fr. Marty Moran to preside at all weekend Masses while I am away. Fr. Moran is a priest of the diocese of Harrisburg PA, and is currently the University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg (a position I left 24 years ago this summer!) He has previously served in campus ministry at Wilson College and Bucknell University and served as the executive director of the Campus Ministry Association and a member of the USCCB Committee on Catholic Education. Earlier he ministered in several parishes and high schools in his home diocese. Even though it is more challenging with all the COVID-19 restrictions, please extend our usual SKD warm welcome to him.
The bulletin this week contains a copy of a letter from Archbishop Lori announcing the appointment of Redemptorist Fr. Bruce Lewandowski as a new auxiliary bishop of Baltimore. Fr. Bruce has been serving as our coordinator of Hispanic ministry, and so he brings a wonderful sense of inclusivity to his new role. He is a parish priest dedicated to his ministry, and typifies the kind of bishop often being appointed by Pope Francis—someone “who smells like the sheep.” We welcome his ministry among us!
The Catholic Bishops of Maryland have issued a letter on racial justice entitled “Building Bridges of Understanding and Hope.” We have re-printed it as an insert in the bulletin for personal reflection. The continued public protests across our country attest to the deeper understanding and behavioral change that are still needed for true racial healing to occur in our country.
