Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Nov 15, 2020

This week, the Vatican released its report on the investigation of the former Cardinal, now laicized Mr. Theodore McCarrick. This brings us, once again, to a painful awareness of the past failures of the Church hierarchy—but it also marks a new era of transparency. The report reveals a clerical system that served to protect, rather than expose, someone against whom there were repeated allegations of sexual misconduct. Along with other institutions (such as the entertainment industry and the Boy Scouts), our Church continues a public accounting of past, often hidden, cases of sexual abuse— and it is a good thing.

The season of Advent begins on 29 November.  For two weekends we are having a display of Advent wreathes, candles, and calendars after all the Masses in the Kate’s Café area.  Our limited supply of items is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Last weekend the weather was beautiful, and Saturday was a perfect day for our annual rain garden mulching day.  Many thanks to Pat O’Connor who coordinated over two dozen volunteers, with special gratitude to Larry Jones and Pat Christoff for their generous service. Please check out the bulletin insert with more information and photos from this project.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way adults prepare for sacramental initiation in the Catholic Church.  If you are thinking about becoming an active Catholic, but (a) have never been baptized, or (b) have been baptized in another Christian denomination, or (c) have been baptized as a Catholic, but have never received your 1st Communion or been confirmed—the RCIA may be for you!  Please consult the insert in the bulletin for more information.

Each year we are able to designate special recipients for a portion of our Annual Appeal, and we always include the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, founded by Saint Katharine Drexel.  A note of gratitude from the Sisters is included in the bulletin.

Fr. Keith
