The Katharine Konnection

Dear parishioners,

The Archdiocese of Baltimore asks all parishes to follow the guidance of local jurisdictions concerning pandemic policies.  As you may be aware, Frederick County lifted the requirement of wearing masks in indoor locations last weekend.  This occurred because of the declining COVID statistics in our area after the recent surge.  This means that Saint Katharine Drexel parishioners are no longer required by the local jurisdiction to wear masks when coming to Mass or other parish events.

However, the CDC recommends that masks be worn indoors in public by everyone two years and older (including people up-to-date on vaccinations) in areas of substantial or high community transmission. According to the statistics, Frederick County remains in high transmission at this time.

I suspect this will be our personal and communal dilemma for some time as we move into the future learning to live with the continuing presence of COVID.  Somehow, we have to walk the line between the extremes of being cavalier and foolish and being fearful and overly-cautious.  As we are urged with other healthcare matters, we must all become our own advocates, learning as much information as we can, and making judicious decisions as to how we can protect ourselves and others during this lingering pandemic.  Masking is one of these decisions.

We will continue to reserve the section of pews on the right-hand side of church for those who wish to maintain 6-foot social distancing (every other pew).  Everyone sitting in this area is required to wear a mask.  As we assemble for worship and other parish activities, it is important for us to be sensitive to those around us, and respectful of the decisions of our fellow parishioners.  None of us has been through this before– hopefully we are all trying to do the best that we can do.
