The Katharine Konnection

Mother Mary Lange

Tomorrow we recognize the Feast Day of Mother Mary Lange.  As you may know, she is represented by one of the icons we have in our church.  Her service aligns with the mission of Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to serve the marginalized people in our society, namely Native American and African American children across the country.

Mother Mary Lange, after immigrating to Baltimore Maryland, recognized the need to help educate the young French-speaking Catholic refugees like herself.  She tirelessly sacrificed her time and personal resources to provide an education for this community when there were no free public schools for children of color in Baltimore.

With the support of the Archbishop at the time, she founded the first religious order for women of African descent in America, the Oblate Sisters of Providence.

As we take time this month to recognize Mother Lange on her feast day, join Archbishop Lori in prayer for her canonization.  Please read his reflection on Mother Mary Lange.
