Ash Wednesday occurs this week and the holy season of Lent begins. We are all invited to be marked with ashes at Masses at 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM that day.  This Lent we will be reflecting on how “Enlightening our Hearts” is an ongoing process made possible as we are unified more fully with God’s love.  All we need to do is open our hearts… and ask.

One of the ways we discover deeper union with God is by our participation in the Mass.  Throughout Lent, resources materials will be shared each week through the bulletin and via email to help you find deeper meaning in worship.  This is another way we are observing the archdiocesan “Year of the Eucharist.”

As is our tradition, we are providing several prayer booklets for use at home during this special season.  Also, each Friday evening in Kate’s Cafe our soup and bread simple Lenten meals will be held at 6:15 PM– you bring the bread, we provide the soup– starting this week.  A variety of Lenten prayer experiences will follow in the church at 7:00 PM.  Please note that all Lenten prayer opportunities will be listed on a purple insert in the bulletin each week.

A sacramental preparation group for students in grades 6-12 who wish to celebrate either the Sacrament of Baptism or make their First Communion will be starting this weekend.  Please note that candidates must have already completed one full year of faith formation and be currently enrolled in classes this year.  Please consult the bulletin for more details and contact information for registering.

This Thursday will be the feast day of our patron Saint Katharine Drexel.  The judges have finished their deliberations, and the winners of the annual Drexel Essay Contest this year are: Neil Bossaller ($1,000– college) and Dela Dzodzomenyo ($500– high school).  Thanks to our judges, and to all the young people who participated!  The winning essays will be shared with parishioners this week in a Katharine Konnection.
