The Katharine Konnection

Fr. Keith’s Korner

Fr. Keith’s Korner

This weekend we welcome Fr. Michael McDermott to preside at weekend Masses while I am away.  Fr. Mike is a retired priest who now lives with his sister here in Frederick.  He is currently serving as chaplain at Saint John’s Catholic Prep, and visiting patients at Frederick Health Hospital, in addition to assisting with Masses in area parishes.

My journey to Iceland and Norway with seventy parishioners (from our parish and the Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City) comes to an end this weekend.  We will hopefully be flying back to Dulles from Amsterdam on Sunday.  I say “hopefully” because you have no doubt heard on the news how many flights have been cancelled each day this summer…

Our Haiti Committee has offered financial assistance from our Haiti Fund to the Institution Jerome Bellanton in the past to assist with their lunch program.  This elementary school was founded by a parishioner at Saint Timothy parish, and provides lunch for the children whenever sufficient funds are available.  We were able to share $6,000 from our poor box fund at the end of the fiscal year to ensure this lunch program will be able to continue in the future.

Pope Francis has established this Sunday 24 July as the annual “World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly” and so a bulletin insert is included this weekend with a prayer to honor this special day.

Please be aware that gluten-free hosts are available at all Masses if you pre-register.  To receive a gluten-free host, please sign up on the bulletin board in the sacristy when you arrive for Mass, and the sacristan will make sure the appropriate number of hosts are provided for communion.  The priest will always have these hosts available in his ciborium.

Jan Scudiero has faithfully guided the volunteers caring for our rain gardens since our church building was constructed six years ago.  As she steps aside from this responsibility, we all say “Thank You, Jan!”
