The Katharine Konnection

Our Drexel Essay Contest attempts to introduce the inspiring legacy of our patron saint Katharine Drexel to the next generation of parishioners.  The winning essayists in each category receive either a $1000 college or a $500 high school scholarship.  Contest rules are in the bulletin as an insert this weekend.  To enter the contest, please obtain an application form from our parish website or Pat O’Connor in the parish office.  Completed essays will be due in the parish office in mid-January.

Katies Ladies is once again coordinating the “Box of Joy” project for our parish, providing a small Christmas present to poor children in seven countries around the world.  To participate, pick up a shoe size box in the narthex during October (including a brochure with suggested gift items) and return the box to the narthex on the designated weekends.  Last year, over 100,000 poor children (who may not have received any other gifts) received a Christmas present from Catholics like you through this program.

Last weekend I read a statement at all Masses from the Archdiocese of Baltimore explaining the decision to file for Chapter 11 Reorganization, which seems to be the best way to provide equitable abuse compensation for victim-survivors, while at the same time allowing the Archdiocese to carry on its mission.  Many people may not be familiar with this kind of legal procedure, and so I have included “Frequently Asked Questions” as a bulletin insert this weekend.  Because the Diocese is incorporated in the State of Maryland separately from each of its parishes, this process applies only to the Archdiocese.  Our parish and all its ministries will continue to draw people closer to God and serve the wider community.

It was 25 years ago this month that the first Masses were held at Frederick Community College to begin gathering people who would start this new parish… God has been with us all along the journey!
