Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Feb 11, 2024

Ash Wednesday occurs this week and the holy season of Lent begins. You are invited to be marked with ashes during Masses at 8:30 AM, 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM that day.  (Please note that there are two evening Masses again this year.) For this Lent our theme is “It’s a gift” and we will be reflecting on the many gifts we are blessed with in this life, and the many gifts that come to us through Jesus, most especially the gift of salvation. The season will encourage us to reflect on how we might better show our gratitude to God for being gifted in these ways.

As is our tradition, we are providing several prayer booklets for use at home during this special season as well as Lenten Rice Bowls. Also, each Friday evening in Kate’s Cafe our soup and bread simple Lenten meals will be held at 6:15 PM– you bring the bread, we provide the soup– starting this week.  A variety of Lenten prayer experiences will follow in the church at 7:00 PM.  Please note that all Lenten prayer opportunities will be listed on a purple insert in the bulletin each week.

In addition to many other Lenten activities, we are offering a Lenten Retreat morning on Saturday 24 February which you can sign up for this weekend in the narthex.  Also, our chair exercise group started in January —so feel free to join them on Thursday mornings at 10:00 AM in the Brockway Room, especially if you have mobility challenges.

Each year our Drexel Essay Contest awards one college and one high school scholarship to young parishioners who research and write about the life of our patron saint.  Our panel of judges evaluates the essays anonymously. This has never happened before, but a brother and sister won the contest this year—and so we congratulate Ernest Binfon (college) and Florence Binfon (high school).  We will share their essays with the parish through a Katherine Konnection near Saint Katharine’s Feast Day in March.
